Creation is a collaborative process. At The Rug Company our handknotted rugs are the result of the shared passion and dedication of a diverse network of people. One that ranges from the skilled weavers in Nepalese mills, to the dedicated teams laying the finished rugs in homes around the globe.

The Rug Company was founded in London by Christopher and Suzanne Sharp in 1997 and was born out of a passion for quality, design, craftsmanship and service. These credentials have enabled The Rug Company to transform an industry and establish itself internationally as the leading name for the finest handmade rugs in the world.

We are privileged to collaborate with many of the world’s most revered and celebrated designers: Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Dale Chihuly, Kelly Wearstler, Diane von Furstenberg, Christopher Kane, David Rockwell and Kelly Behun. We also have our own in-house design team whose knowledge of rug design is unsurpassed

Every one of our rugs is entirely handmade, meticulously woven or knotted by Nepalese weavers applying ancient techniques passed down through many generations. It is a remarkable, slow craft composed of several stages that require great dexterity and care, from the gentle spinning of the wool to the intricate trimming of the pile of the finished rug. Every rug is traditionally made but designed for modern living. Created using the very best natural materials by hand to preserve and ensure durability, each rug should last a lifetime.

The rug making process has changed little for hundreds of years. It is nature sustainable and environmentally non-invasive. We are pleased to make a vital contribution to the economy of the regions we work in. We are members of Good Weave, an organisation which works to ensure no child labour is ever used in the rug-making process. We take further responsibility for the wellbeing of our weavers by providing mobile health and vaccination clinics. We work with an independent expert to help us continually improve all aspects of the process.
